OF AMERICAN ART
Lone Star Portraits features distinctive artists’s
self-portraits alongside those of their friends
and colleagues through May 10, and Benito
Huerta: Axis Mundi v. 2 is shown through May
17. Esther Pearl Watson created Pasture Cows
Crossing Indian Creek specifically for the Amon
Carter’s atrium, featured beginning May 19.
Remington and Russell explores the American
West through May 24. From May 23–Aug.
23, the museum will participate in a national
tour organized by the Terra Foundation for
American Art with a showing of Samuel F.B.

BARBIER-MUELLER MUSEUM
The Samurai Collection boasts its status as
the most complete and largest museum in
the world devoted to samurai objects, and
the only venue outside of Japan to focus on
the armor of Japan’s military elite. Each
Thursday, the museum offers Lunchtime
Talks led by the staff, and Saturday Family
Days encourage kids of all ages to learn
about samurai culture through hands-on

OF ASIAN ART
At the Crow Collection, Mystical Arts of
Tibet is a weeklong artist residency program
welcoming Tibetan Buddhist monks from
the Drepung Loseling Monastery as they
construct a Tantric Buddhist mandala and
sand painting. Visitors are invited to witness
the process, April 25–May 3. After Dark:

31 Days of
Asia features new events and activities each
day in May in celebration of Asian-Pacific

An eponymous show, Nate Lowman explores
urban decay and pop-culture through his
edgy paintings, intriguing sculptures, and
installations. Shown concurrently, David
Salle’s Debris features the artist’s figurative

with contemporary elements in his works

Changing notions of selfhood and self-representation as depicted via digital
technology and the Internet are explored
in Concentrations 59: Mirror Stage–Visualizing
the Self After the Internet. The exhibition
features an international roster of artists,
running April 10–Dec. 6. On April 11, the
DMA hosts Art Ball 50: Self-Portrait chaired
by Nancy Carlson. The luxury auction and
dinner benefits the museum. Inca: Conquests of
the Andes explores the dynamism of cultural
convergence surrounding the development
of state expansion and imperial conquest.
