A WAYFARING DESIGNER INFORMS THE SHINE BY S.H.O.
MODERN VINTAGE COLLECTION.
uickening the heart as it thrills the mind, glamour is an element of design often sought, but difficult to find. Perhaps the
source lies in the journey? No one knows better than Susan Hornbeak-Ortiz, designer of Shine By S.H.O., and an expert
on the subject of wanderlust. Her Modern Vintage Collection includes dramatic upholstered furniture, tables, striking
chandeliers, and more, available in Dallas exclusively at Laura Lee Clark Interior Design. From a posh Slocum Street showroom,
the very glamorous creations of Hornbeak-Ortiz take clients on a “journey across the globe.”
Fresh from her latest voyage to the South Pacific islands of French Polynesia, Hornbeak-Ortiz chatted with us from her home
base in Laguna Niguel, California. “Travel is the lifeblood of my work,” she explained, noting a trip to Paris earlier this year,
and annual pilgrimages to India. “Every trip I take carves a new space in my creative soul, and adds another layer to the current
collection.” These figurative layers take on tactile, textural shape in the Celine Coffee Table. Bleached oak surrounds coiled
snakeskin, atop a gold leaf base. Hornbeak-Ortiz describes the striking piece, which can be configured to the client’s desire, as
“beautiful and a bit dangerous.” Could any label be more apt for an object of pure glamour?
As the name would imply, lighting is another specialty of this 10-year-old line. Attracted by “unexpected ways of illumination,”
our multi-talented tour guide takes a cue from her sculpture-focused Master of Fine Arts in the Camile Chandelier. Antique gold-finished orbs emit an ambient, LED glow. And to conclude, counterbalancing all this drama, all this glamorous jet-setting, is a
practical foundation. Customization via myriad material and finish options allows the effect of most items in the Shine by S.H.O.
range to shift to suit a client’s style. After all, Hornbeak-Ortiz envisions her work in the home of a “very private, creative, and
well-travelled” individual. lauraleeclark.com –Lisa Petty
