ow would you characterize an artist-in-residence program that
offers: 1) a chance to produce new work in a large project
space at the Goss-Michael Foundation; 2) air transportation
to and from Dallas; 3) a furnished luxury suite, with meal card, in
the Fairmont Dallas in the Arts District; 4) 24-hour concierge and
transportation; 5) full staff support from the GMF; 6) socializing
and networking ops with the city’s art patrons and collectors; 7) all
culminating in a solo exhibition at the Goss-Michael Foundation?
We’ll turn the floor over to Foundation co-founder Kenny Goss
himself—“It’s kind of a Five-Star, it really is,” he assesses with a
laugh. “We help our artists in residence integrate completely into the
collectors’ community here, [into] the social scene here, into the art
world. They really become a part of the city…” The Foundation’s
first AIR, British-born Dan Rees, arrived in the spring of 2013 and
inaugurated the program. Kevin Rubén Jacobs, GMF’s Assistant
Curator and Exhibitions Manager, says, “It was great to have an
emerging artist here who was having a really successful start to his
career, living in Dallas for several weeks. It was a good thing for him,
not only to work a solid eight to nine hours a day, but he also knew
how to relax, unwind, enjoy the city, and meet a lot of great people.”
