In a series of auctions beginning June 2 Heritage Auctions presents the wealth of stunning
gems and minerals that comprise the Hoppel Collection. These museum-level specimens
include coppers, aquamarines, and an array of rare rocks that includes La Madona Rosa.
“Fine minerals are an exciting new collectible emerging on the scene,” says Mary Walker,
director of nature and science at Heritage Auctions. “[They] resonate with color, form, and
astonishing aesthetics—and all from the hands of Mother Nature.” The HA team of Jim
Walker, Mary Fong, and Craig Kissick has more than 90 years of combined experience in
the world of fine minerals and gemstones, and the three believe this collection will astonish
mineral collectors. In fact, they see La Madona Rosa (the Pink Madonna) as a contender for
the title of “world’s finest rose quartz specimen since the Van Allen Belt.” This specimen
measures 15. 5 x 8 inches and the outline resembles the traditional depictions of the Virgin
Mary with a smoky quartz “body” and sparkling rose quartz outline. Like many of the
pieces in this auction, it surfaced at the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show. These auctions mark
the first time since the 1990s that this collection of more than 2,000 pieces will be in public
view, presented with almost no reserve. Heritage Auctions is proud to offer these pieces at
Signature and Internet auctions throughout 2013 and 2014. Image: La Madona Rosa (The
