The MAC’s annual fundraiser, Blue Yule, is set for Dec.
1. Christmas ornaments and decorations by artists
featured at the MAC and numerous local artisans will
be sold at this much-anticipated holiday bash, which
gives friends and supporters the opportunity to eat,
drink, mingle, and enjoy live music and a silent auction
presented by The MAC PAC (Professionals + Artists
Collective). Last year Brian Cobble, Mary Beth Edelson, Rusty Scruby, and John Alexander were among
the 150-plus artists to donate ornaments and art.

The popular exhibit Diego Velazquez: The Early Portraits, which includes the portrait of Philip IV (1623-
28), continues through Jan. 13. Concurrently, Pablo
Picasso’s Vigt Poemes is on display, featuring an art
book on the sonnets of Gongora, whose portrait by
Velazquez is in the Velazquez show. Picasso copied
20 of the Baroque poet Gongora’s sonnets and created an illuminated manuscript, preceding each with

FOCUS: Gary Simmons is the inaugural Director’s
Council Focus exhibition featuring the “erasure”
technique of New York-based artist Gary Simmons.
The ethereal images originated as semi-erased works
on chalkboards, evolving into paintings and works
on paper imitating smudged chalk. Nov. 11-Jan. 6.
The exhibit shifts to FOCUS: Yinka Sonibare, MBE
Jan. 13. Also showing: Companion (Passing Through)
through Jan. 6. Selections from the Permanent Collection

Currently on display is a “best of” show, with an
assemblage of premier local geometric artists, curated by Dan Pritchett, into a single exhibit in the
museum’s contemporary galleries. The museum is
working with curator and artist Orna Feinstein on
an upcoming (opening Jan. 13) exhibit Optical Spaces
featuring the work of Victor Vasarely. Vasarely is
the acknowledged leader of the Op-Art movement,
and his innovations in color and optical illusion

13 NASHER SCULPTURE CENTER
Sightings: Eva Rothschild features the London-based
artist. She creates a network of painted piping in
the Nasher’s foyer, with the goal of redefining
our experience of architecture, through Jan. 20.
Two exhibits focused on sculpture are on view
through Jan. 13. Rediscoveries: Modes of Making in
Modern Sculpture, traces the root of making sculpture in the past 125 years with masterpieces from
the Raymond and Patsy Nasher Collection.
Sculpture in So Many Words: Text Pieces 1960-80 focuses

On Dec. 1 the much-anticipated new building
opens to the public. Designed by Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate Thom Mayne, the structure
will house 11 permanent exhibit/learning halls with
venues exploring everything from gems and minerals to the expanding universe to the human body.
Among the highlights is the Rose Hall of Birds,
which allows participants to create a virtual species.
